Joël Francis is an independent pop musician from Belgium. She released her first single this year on Spotify, but we will talk about her latest single, InterPhased, which took the internet by storm when it was released last month.
InterPhased is a dreamy love song about two souls finding each other and colliding at that powerful moment. The strong connection two people can have is reflected in the slow-balled R&B vibe of this tune.
“We made it in one night because everything just fit so smoothly from the start. The instruments combined with the vocals really serve for taking you on this trip with us”
Joël Francis
Her music is included in one of our playlists, which you can listen to below, and also know more about the artist by scrolling down the page.
Who is Joël Francis?
She is a 22-year-old artist with Surinamese roots living in Belgium, she is Joël Francis aka Joëlle Francis. It has been something the artist has longed for since she was a child, to be a part of something bigger and greater.
Francis sees music as part of this larger picture, like the feeling of coming home but at the same time belonging somewhere that even transcends yourself. Her music is reflective, with meaningful lyrics. It was at the age of nine when she began writing poetry and lyrics, and she hasn’t stopped since.
Joël Francis – Throughout her life, she had been surrounded by music, first by gospel music, then by soul, jazz, R&B, and pop. Her inspiration comes from artists such as Snoh Aalegra, Sza, Victoria Monet, HER and Jazmine Sullivan, just to name a few examples.
Joël Francis states that her admiration for these artists stems from the fact that their music so speaks to her from the heart. In her own music, she aspires to achieve the same thing. Her music should come directly from the heart to the listeners.
This will make them feel like they’re a part of something, even if it’s just one person. Joël Francis is just beginning to embark on an exciting musical journey to embrace her purpose in music, and we are convinced you won’t be the last to hear about her.
JOËL FRANCIS INTERVIEW BY POPHITS.NEWS
Your new single InterPhased has just recently been released, and we loved it! We are very curious about how it came about.
Let’s start by talking about this great connection between you and the other members of your team. Who are the collaborators of this new project?
I’m proud to be working with my partner, Zofilo, on this song. I am so fortunate to be able to work with such a talented group.
Where and how did you meet? What was your first meeting like?
We met in the studio, initially recording for a song I was featured on for another artist.
Are there any main influences on the band that you would like to talk about?
Yes, I would say Kali Uchis, Don Toliver, Sza, Jazmine Sullivan, Victoria Monet,
Can you tell us about your plans or commitments for this “coming back” after the restrictions on live events were waved?
We are going to perform our (still unreleased) song “We could” at a global for students in Leuven. It’s going to be a pretty big event and that will also be the first time we’ll be live.
“Joël Francis, one of the newest acts in the industry with a new style, is going to impress you and you should definitely check out her outstanding music” – PopHits.Co.
In order to guide us to a good understanding of this project, we were curious as to how you developed it and who was involved not just in the planning stages but also during the production of it. Would you mind giving us an update on how they are doing?
This single was recorded at the Burn studios in Leuven. Tevin/Zofilo has access to this studio as he is one of the producers there. Tevin mixed and produced the track. But the mastering was done by Shunin. Another producer I make songs with. He produced my first single IMUP and my second single, Down Bad. Which are both live on Spotify.
Are there any particular music styles or events that inspired the single? Is there a particular message behind it?
We really were inspired by the musical and romantic relationship between Kali Chis and Don Toliver. They make magical music and their chemistry really shines through their sound.
Would you be able to briefly describe the song’s meaning in a few words?
InterPhased is a song about two souls finding each other and colliding at that. The strong connection two people can have is reflected in the slow-balled R&B vibe of this song. We made it in one night, the same night we started falling for each other. Everything we want the listeners to feel with this song, we also feel for each other.
It is amazing to see the harmony between the professionals involved in this project. Were these professionals chosen by you, if so, how did you go about it?
The funny thing is that we “weren’t supposed to” meet each other the day that we met. It was just one big coincidence because he was just in the studio to open the door for us, in case one of the other producers forgot their key. But this coincidence led to a fruitful collaboration and relationship.
As our interview comes to an end I would like to ask you to share with our readers and fans one word that distinguishes your work as a musician and your collaboration with the outstanding professionals involved?
GREATNESS. We both house this when we make a song and think it’s about to be a hit.
We would like to thank you for your contribution to our music news portal. We enjoyed the contact with you and your team, and we look forward to hearing about your upcoming projects. Having you and your team on board is gonna be an honour.
